During the period of the Spanish conquest of Guatemala, the shores of the lake were the scene of the great battle in which the Spanish and their Cakchiquel allies defeated the Tzutuhils. The Spanish set up a church and monastery in Panajachel soon afterward, and used the town as a center for converting the Indians of the region to the Catholic faith. The original facade of the church stills stands, and is one of the gems of the colonial style in Guatemala.

ok, now that you have all the typical Wikipedia stuff I’m going to add my tow cents. Panajachel is a small but bustling little town. Upon entering it’s town borders after descending down what it seems miles of winding roads, you enter a series of narrow but crowded streets. The typical indigenous merchats that most of Guatemala is known for also abound here. The most obvious thing that stands out here is the number of tourists on it’s streets. After speaking to some locals we learned that many Americans and Europeans actually come and stay in Panajachel…for good. The weather was really nice the day we were there. Sunny and comfortable, perhaps not warm enough for a dip in the lake but comfortable.

Tourists Beware

Like any tourist spot, the locals know that you are coming with some cash and this place is no different. Upon arriving, we were approached by no less than 6 people offering us anything from boat trips to lunch on the lake. It got so bad that I became annoyed, and that is a hard thing to accomplish with me. Finally, we gave in and had lunch at one of the lake shore eateries. The food was nice even though the bread on my sandwich was moldy…jaja.

Panajachel has some pf the most amazing views I’ve ever seen, the cascade the you encounter as you make your way to the lake is amazing. The people are not unlike what we experienced throughout Guatemala: kind and courteous for the most part.

Well, it was time to head to Guatemala City and say good bye to this neat little place. Our budget would have been blown had we gave in to all the cool stuff for sale on the streets. We did get a few wrist bands…I know..”big spenders” but we had to watch our centavos.

We boarder the first “chicken bus” out of Panajachel and said “so long” to the beautiful lake town of Panajachel, but vowed to one day return (with lots more cash).

The term “altitude sickness” describes a group of disorders affecting the lungs, brain, and central nervous system after travelers arrive at an elevation over 8,000 feet (2,500 meters).

The most common altitude-related disorder is acute mountain sickness, or AMS. The hallmark diagnostic feature of AMS is headache. AMS occurs in persons who have recently arrived at altitude greater than 8,000 feet suffering dull, throbbing headache, worse when bending down or straining to reach, and more intense at night and during the morning. Other AMS symptoms may include vomiting, nausea, fatigue, vertigo, or insomnia. Mountain sickness may strike as soon as 1 hour after arrival, but more usually develops within 6 to 10 hours. It can be relieved by descent to a lower elevation, and usually dissipates with or without treatment in 3 to 7 days.

There is a set of factors that do not protect against AMS, including:

Gender
Physical condition
Pre-ascent training
Previous high-altitude experience
Smoking or not smoking
Youth or age

Counterintuitively, persons in good physical condition are actually more like to suffer AMS, not less. Younger, fit individuals are more likely to engage in vigorous physical activity and to go higher and faster than the less athletically inclined. Moreover, common conditions such as coronary artery disease, mild chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, hypertension, and pregnancy do not increase (or decrease) susceptibility to AMS. Persons under the age of 50, however, are more susceptible than older adults.

At the other end of the spectrum of altitude-related disorders is high-altitude pulmonary edema. It less common than mountain sickness, but also strikes even the physically fit. About 8 per cent of climbers who develop acute mountain sickness at altitudes greater than 15,000 feet go to develop HAPE. HAPE is diagnosed by a combination of two symptoms and two signs in the setting of a recent gain in altitude:

Symptoms (at least 2):

Dyspnea (being out of breath) at rest
Cough
Weakness or decreased exercise performance
Chest tightness or congestion

Signs (at least 2):

Rales or wheezing in at least 1 lung field
Central cyanosis (blue color not just in the fingers but also in the lips and mouth)
Tachypnea (breathing fast)
Tachycardia (racing heart)

The symptoms of HAPE usually begin 1 to 3 days after arrival at a high altitude. There may be a dry cough, followed later by coughing yellow sputum and/or blood. A mild fever of up to 101° F (38.5° C) is not uncommon, although higher fever suggests pneumonia. These symptoms are caused by a condition analogous to a high-pressure leak in the lung. When the concentration of oxygen in the bloodstream goes down, the pulmonary artery constricts, and pulmonary artery pressure increases. This vasoconstriction, however, does not occur evenly throughout the lung. Some regions of the lung become engorged with blood, and the capillaries relieve their pressure by pouring water and proteins into the lung. As small patches of the lung are “flooded out,” the lungs absorb even less oxygen and the pathological process accelerates.

HAPE is a medical emergency, requiring immediate treatment on site and evacuation to lower altitude. Mountain sickness, however, is treatable.

The first thing travelers can do to avoid mountain sickness is to travel to high altitudes slowly. If you trek to a high altitude during the day, try to sleep at a lower altitude at night. Especially when climbing above 10,000 feet (3,000 meters), it is important to sleep at an elevation no more than 2,000 to 3,000 feet (600 to 900 meters) higher than the previous night. An alternate strategy is called staging.

You spend 2 to 3 days at an intermediate altitude (typically 8,000 feet/2,500 meters) before traveling higher. Every 3,000 to 4,000 feet (1,000 to 1,300 meters) up you spend another day acclimating to altitude. Unfortunately, few guided tours allow you the luxury of spending a day acclimating to altitude, and AMS is common.

Travelers to mountain destinations are also well-served to abandon their high-protein diets. Why? Eating carbohydrate and fat encourages they hypoxic ventilatory response. Simply put, carbs and fats have to be burned. The body produces more carbon dioxide, increasing the volume of respiration of carbon dioxide out, but also increasing the volume of respiration of oxygen in.

Finally, travelers to mountain destinations can take prophylactic treatment. The standby of mountain climbers, Diamox (acetazolamide) forces the kidneys to excrete bicarbonate. This acidifies the blood. Metabolic acidosis is a stimulant to respiration, increasing ventilation and oxygenation. Diamox prevents extreme hypoxia during sleep, but it also increases the need to urinate, which may be complicated in conditions of extreme wind and cold.

Be careful with the use of aspirin and Ibuprofen, particularly pretreatment with aspirin before travel to the mountain destination. NSAIDs stop headache, but may make you unaware of serious symptoms. Sleeping aids are also not recommended because they may depress respiration and decrease oxygenation.

OK, so you’ve seen my article on choosing a location “Best Hotel Location – Ixtapa Or Zihuatanejo?” (if you haven’t, perhaps you should do so now!). You’ve settled on a general area, perhaps even have your plane tickets in hand, now how in the heck to decide which Hotel is “right” for your specific desires?

First question:

How much effort and time do you want to invest? This is the single most important factor in determining how well your hotel choice “fits” you. Obviously, the more (productive) time spent researching hotel choices, the better off you will be to make an educated choice.

NOTE: In the previous paragraph I said “productive time spent”, not just “time spent”. Especially while doing research on the Internet, there are a vast number of “time-traps”… sites that are aimed towards making booking at any cost, with very little factual, unbiased information. The goal of EVERY booking site is to MAKE BOOKINGS! Sure, they may have reviews (*see note below*) and pretty pictures, but what they really want is your money. They do not care how they make it.

OK, back to the topic. In increasing order of time spent, your choices are basically these:

Travel Agencies.

Individual hotel or chain sites.

On-line reservation sites.

Individual Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo sites and forums.

NOTE: If you came here looking for links to recommended travel, hotel or booking sites, you will be disappointed. I do not include links to any sites, although I may write about some that I (personally) like. The idea is not to promote one site over another, the idea is to describe techniques and “food-for-thought”. Who is to say that Whoopee Bookings is better or worse than WhizBang Bookings?

Travel Agencies Simple right? Walk in, pick up a glossy brochure and peer at the 2 inch pictures. Choices? Let’s see (I am actually looking at one as I write this). 8 choices in Ixtapa and 3 in Zihuatanejo. Not bad you say? There exist hundreds of hotels, bungalows, villas, condos etc. In the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area!

These are the hotels that do business with the agency. Period.

You can form your own conclusions. I am not in any way against travel agents or package tour companies — in fact you can often get a great deal from them, and if you happen to know an agent well and he or she has actually been to Ixtapa or Zihuatanejo, even better.

Hotel Web Sites Obviously, you can’t expect a hotel’s website to give you complete unbiased reviews of their properties, but they do have one big advantage:

You are in direct contact with the hotel.

Calling their phone number or sending an email will put you in contact with the Hotel (or chain) directly. This can very often result in:

Cheaper rates — they don’t have to pay a commission to someone else.

Last-minute cancellation deals — who knows better than the front-desk or reservations clerks?

More room choices. Especially with package deals, you choices may be few. For example, the rooms with the nicest view may not be available in a package deal as it would “break” their $999 package price.

NOTE: you can tell if a telephone number is within the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area very easily — the area code is “755″ as in 755-555-1212 and the country code is “52″ as in 011-52-755-555-1212.

On-line Reservation Sites There are dozens, even hundreds. Why? Easy… it is a very financially rewarding market to be in. Think about it, no inventory, no physical product to deliver, just charge commissions.

More and more there is very little difference between the big sites. The price differences are minimal between say Expedia and Travelocity (no endorsement implied!). By all means, use them, just bear in mind the following:

Know who you are dealing with. The big boys are well established, but some of the little guys… who really knows. Save yourself some trouble and do a little checking. As a hotel owner in Zihuatanejo, I can say from past experience that not all reservation services are the same. There are times when I haven’t been paid, or it has taken months to receive payment. Meanwhile of course, the guests have come and gone, they have paid and had every expectation of receiving what they paid for, and justifiably so.

Ignore the stars!. Well, up to a limit. Bear in mind that star ratings are entirely subjective. Especially in small towns like Ixtapa or Zihuatanejo — indeed most of Mexico, there is no, repeat no “star rating authority” (AAA for example). I have seen hotels that have one star on a particular site and 3 stars on another!

If the site boasts reviews or user-comments, read them. Read the reviews or comments with a grain of salt to start. If a hotel only has one comment… well, obviously it can’t be the consensus view can it? Also, depending on which site, the user comments can be a little dodgy too. Not on the big sites, but the smaller ones. It is painfully easy to “seed” positive comments about your own hotel.

Not all hotels are available online. The biggies in Ixtapa of course, but the majority of smaller ones, especially in Zihuatanejo, are not. Nor will you find apartments, bungalows, private villas etc. Look to the local sites to find them.

Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Sites and Forums These are not reservation services per se, although they all have advertising. I am now going to suspend my rule about not giving a site a recommendation, but if you haven’t already been to the site, you should: TripAdvisor. They have user-forums for both Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo.

Try it out. By far and away the majority of users are honest and helpful and the site makes it very hard to engage in self-publicity.

Lonely Planet can be useful as well, but they just don’t have the volume. There are also forums on some of the local sites but they are generally populated with two types of people — those seeking information and locals trying to promote their own interest. Not useless by any stretch, but again, take it with a grain of salt.

In summary, the more homework you do, the better chance you will have of being content with your choice.

To summarize the favorites selected, which will help you plan your next visit to Las Vegas, here’s a recap:

The “Best Strip Hotel” selection is the Bellagio according to the readers and Caesars Palace as the RJ pick. The Bellagio continually is the readers pick while Caesars Palace continues to update and re-invent itself. If you are planning to visit the Grand Canyon either as a 1-Day-Activity or if you wish to make a week of it, there are plenty of options.

Here are 10 ways to explore the Grand Canyon. Many people could easily spend all day just looking at this magical wonder, but there are other ways you can enjoy the mighty Grand Canyon.

If you are pressed for time, it is certainly still feasible to enjoy the Grand Canyon as a 1-Day activity; you may just feel a little rushed. If you leave early and prepare yourself for a long day, it can be done.

If you are a traveler who has a little extra time, you would likely appreciate taking that extra day or two and view the other sightseeing attractions as you make your way to the Grand Canyon.

Many visitors spend the night in another town, such as Sedona, Arizona, where the beauty of the red-rock will astound you. If you choose to drive from the Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area, plan on about 4.5 hours of travel time to get to the Grand Canyon.

If you decide to stay in Flagstaff before traveling to Grand Canyon National Park, it is approximately 80 miles away, which should take about an hour and a half to drive there. If you stay in Sedona, the Canyon is about a two-hour drive.

The Grand Canyon National Park offers a free shuttle at the South Rim in Grand Canyon Village, along Hermit Road. Note that these shuttles provide transportation only and are not considered tour buses. (Bus Tours are available, however.)

You are required to exit the bus to view the Canyon. It is important to note that if you or someone in your group has a physical challenge, most shuttles are inaccessible to wheelchairs.

Here are 10 excellent ways to explore the Grand Canyon.

1. Go boating or rafting. There are plenty of companies who are willing to take you on a very specialized tour-guided river experience inside the Grand Canyon. If you choose to go rafting, though, keep in mind that the water can get a little rough at times, but you will certainly be in good hands with your tour guide and required life jacket.

2. Go hiking. Many hiking trails exist throughout the area. The South Rim is where the most popular hike is. The name of this trail on the South Rim is named Bright Angel Trail, located near Grand Canyon Village.

On the North Rim, the most popular hiking trail is North Kaibab. (No permit is required here.)

No permit is needed for day hiking, but you will need a permit if you choose to camp inside the Grand Canyon, as dictated by the National Park Service.

The most popular backpacking site is the Bright Angel Campground. Bright Angel Campground is located at the end of Bright Angel Trail.

3. If you are not afraid of heights, you can always try out the new Grand Canyon Skywalk which recently opened this past spring! The Skywalk is officially open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week. It first opened March 28, 2007, and from all accounts, is something very special and exciting.

4. Take a helicopter or a mule ride inside the Canyon. You will find several companies who will give you a bird’s eye view down inside the Canyon.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is the first walkway to suspend more than 4,000 feet above the Canyon floor. It extends 70 feet from the rim and is located at Grand Canyon West’s Eagle Point.

5. Take a helicopter ride. Tours originate at either the Grand Canyon Airport, five miles south of the park entrance or in Sedona.

6. Drive to the South Rim and park your car and walk to the edge of the Grand Canyon. If you don’t like large groups, or if you just prefer doing things on your own time, you certainly have this option.

7. You can access the Grand Canyon Railway train for some fun, too. Sit back and relax! Jump the train in Williams, Arizona, where it will escort you precisely to Grand Canyon Village.

8. Take a bus tour. Many tour companies are available for your tour to the Grand Canyon.

If you are considering exploring South America, Brazil should be at the top of your list. Brazil is an absolute blast for backpackers given the friendly people and very happy attitude of the culture.

Brazil has become a hot destination for many young travelers wishing to see a different sort of culture and climate. Where many college age people of former generations would spend their summer vacations trekking across Europe, today many Americans and Europeans spend that time in Brazil. While Brazil is generally considered to be a friendly and accommodating country to visitors, it’s important to take a few steps to assure that your trip will be a pleasant one.

The main language spoken in Brazil is Portuguese, unlike the Spanish spoken in the rest of South America. If you take the time to learn a few key phrases in Portuguese, the people will be even friendlier as well as patient with the language barrier. You will need a visa to spend time in Brazil. For United States citizens, that will cost you $100 (free for Europeans!). You will also need about $35 a day to live on while in Brazil. Your best bet is not to visit during December through February, as this is summer in Brazil and prices tend to go up when the country goes on vacation. If you want to be in the country for Carnival, however, you’ll need to spend the extra money and travel to Brazil in the end of February.

Click here to view the embedded video.If you enjoy the beach life, Brazil is definitely for you. You can spend days on the beach in hotspots such as Rio de Janeiro. This is by far the touristiest area of the country, so try to get out and about to other areas. Salvador da Bahia and Recife are worth a visit. Sau Paolo and Brasilia are not so hot and probably should be avoided. Remembering to bring all of your necessities with you, including enough money to get along and your passport, as well as an open mind will make your trip to Brazil a memorable and interesting journey.

Travel insurance has an interesting reputation with those who are frequent travelers. Some see the need for travel insurance, while others cannot see a need for the insurance itself. There are many different arguments for each side of the case. When it comes down to it, however, there are several reasons for people to make sure that they have travel insurance before they go on their trip. While there are multiple different kinds of insurance, and multiple reasons to get the insurance, here are five reasons why you need travel insurance for your next trip.

Although future resort development is a possibility, Puerto Peñasco remains for now a leisurely sun, fun and fishing destination for RVers and campers. An extreme range between low and high tide, which can be more than 20 feet, characterizes the local waters. This phenomenon also occurs at San Felipe on the Baja peninsula side of the gulf. About 30 miles (48 km) north of Puerto Peñasco Mex. 8 passes near the crater-strewn landscape of Pinacate Desert National Park; the park entrance is off of Mexico Highway 2, west of Sonoita.

My Take

Puerto Peñasco or Rocky Point as it is known to most “gringos” north of the border had eluded me for several years, especially since I was only four hours from this small but growing beach town. Family living in the Phoenix area had always made several treks per year to enjoy some sun and “Pollo con Mole” and on more than one occasion made formal invitations to join them but always declined for one reason or another.

Then on the last weekend in September, I decide that I had to check out what this little Mexican town was la about.

The drive from Phoenix was roughly 4 hours mainly because we obeyed the speed limit – we didn’t want any altercations with the border patrol or highway police in the area. The border and the few towns near the border are full of insurance agencies selling Mexican Insurance. You definitely want to buy some insurance; in fact it is the law that you must carry insurance while in Mexico. Makes sense to get the basic coverage and perhaps a little bit more, if you can afford it.

Upon crossing from the US side, you instantly realize that “we were not in Kansas anymore.” Once we cross the border, there is a one hour stretch to Puerto Peñasco. You want to beware of the poorly posted traffic laws and the endless stray dogs.

Arriving into Puerto Peñasco, again your remanded that this is Mexico, streets are not paved with the exception of the main drags into town and towards the new developments going up on the beach.

Beachfront condominium rates range from $120 per night all the way to $1500 for some really plush pads worthy of any celeb or high roller. We chose to stay at La Princesa, which is right on the beach. Our stay cost us $179 bucks but since we went as a group of four, we ended up paying just over $45 per person. The staff was very courteous and prompt, the rooms were top notch. For a minute I forgot that I was not in the US enjoying the many comforts like hot water, cable TV, and typical American staples in the pantry.

After settling in, we decide to take a ride into town to enjoy some authentic food. The Malecon as is known, which typically is the boardwalk, was replete with shops vying for your dollars. It doesn’t matter if you need it or not, most likely you will not escape some local selling you a bracelet, hat, or $5 sunglasses. It’s part of the experience, really. Once we made it past the many shops, we found a nice little place right at the end of the Malecon. We were seated on the second floor where we could overlook the entire beach area, an amazing site to behold and well worth it whether the food was good or not. To our luck, the food was great. Most eateries along the Malecon are pretty good; however, always use some common sense when trying certain foods that you might not be used to back at home.

Returning to the condo in the early evening we found that the tide had gone out. This was an interesting sight, which invited us to do some exploring close to 100 yards from where the water line had been all day.

The following day we made it back out to the beach for some sun and fun. There is no shortage of stuff to do if you are active. The locals are quick to offer banana boat rides for $5 bucks per person. Jet skis are also available for about $50 per hour. Beware though with some units as they are very rough and maintained even worse. Para gliders are also available if you dare. As with all water sports, always demand life jackets and use some common sense. If you have been enjoying too many alcoholic drinks, it’s best to watch and wait till you are 100%.
The trip back was inevitable, no one in the group wanted to leave this fun little beach town. The afternoon was sunny and the trip back through the desert was quick and uneventful.

I highly recommend this small Mexican beach town. Condo prices are still affordable but with the impending construction of a main highway straight from the southern California are, this hidden gem will not stay hidden for too long, and affordability will say “hasta la vista, baby.”
